This amazing tool for getting kids to exercise also teaches which poses strengthen which parts of the body, so that kids can really understand the reason behind each pose & how it can benefit them. If they don't get why they are doing something, most kids I know just won't care to do it. Oh, & of course, it has to be fun!
There are also great suggestions for aerobic activities kids can take part in alone, such as jumping jacks, or in groups, such as soccer, & a workout journal in the back that can be copied so kids can get used to the idea of keeping a record of their commitment to their health. This journal would also be a great tool for parents who want to reward their kids for completed weekly workouts.
Walk Like a Bear is designed for kids ages 6-12, but I think that could be expanded to the age of 5 to 14 or 15, & many of the activities are great for kids to do with their friends. The bold colorful illustrations & easy-to-understand text make this the perfect book for kids who have never exercised before, or even for those who may need something more exciting than just the usual gym time at school. The emphasis on yoga & stretching is rarely found in school gym classes, & the fact that this book looks so great will make it that much easier to get kids to read, & pay attention to.
Kudos to Carol Bassett for recognizing the need for such a book, & for taking up the challenge to create it herself. Imagine how much healthier our kids could be if we teach them to walk like a bear, stand like a tree, & run like the wind?
